I think that the P1316 means that the IDM, which is another computer like the PCM, has some fault codes stored in it. It doesn't mean the IDM is bad. See if you can get to a scanner and see if it is tripping any p127x codes. You will probably find one or more codes in the p127X range meaning open circuit between IDM and injector, with the x letting you what cylinder is having the problem. Also check the under valve cover harnesses to see if it may have come loose. I have seen alot of posts from people that said the plastic pieces get hot/brittle and come loose.
I think there is a kit available for the little plastic pieces to lock the connectors in place. Retainer (Under Valve Cover Harness clips) Ford Part # 2C3Z-14A163-AB. The IDM operates as two 'banks' of injector drivers (right and left) - a fault on a bank can cause that bank to shut down, so then you're driving a V-4.
That's why the original poster's wife found herself with a truck with no power. A power-off/power-on resets the fault condition in the IDM, and if it's an intermittent cause the truck can seem fine again until the underlying cause happens again. Our 2000 X had an IDM that would be put into V-4 mode by, I kid you not, a really powerful radio transmitter tower along a certain road near my office.
Every time you'd drive by that spot, it would drop 4 cylinders. I didn't normally drive it to work so we'd only had this happen 3 or 4 times while my wife had been driving near there. At work one day I convinced the guys to go out to lunch along that road so I could try it one more time to prove to myself that's what was happening. Sure enough, right in that spot, WHAM. Except this time the whole engine died!
I coasted the beast (with its no-longer-power-steering-or-brakes!) into a parking lot. Which happened to be right across the street from a Ford dealer. They had it towed over there, ordered an IDM, replaced it the next day, and I was back on the road. The new IDM was not haunted like the one that died, and we never had that problem again. My co-workers have never stopped calling me an idiot for saying 'let's go see if we can get my truck to die along this road!'

And then proceeding to do so, stranding us all during lunch.
